First full day in Alaska got to meet one of my favorite artists
My daughter and I drove from Anchorage to Homer Alaska on Monday.
It was a beautiful drive, we saw snow capped mountains, volcanoes, and so much that was just
amazing to our eyes. Once in Homer I met up with one of my favorite former pccrafter artists Carolee Jones. She and her husband, 2 of their 4 daughters (and she has a son too ;) ) and 2 darling little boys she was caring for, for the day - took us out for a delighful lunch. We went to Two Sisters Bakery and Cafe. Oh it was delicious and the desserts were as Carolee described - to die for. Over bubbly conversation and good food, I and my daughter had a memorable afternoon. I will post more photos and stuff about our adventure in Alaska. But we are off today on another leg of our journey - up to Denali National Park.

First photos with Rebel XTi
Took the new camera out last night to one of my favorite locations to test it out. For an entry level camera it handles very nicely - especially at night - since the large lcd screen on the back does double duty as the information screen as well. There are also a few nice little touches, such as a count-down for the self-timer and the cut-out sensors when you bring your eye up to the viewfinder. Overall I was very impressed.
The vertical grip creaks and groans a bit, especially given my usual 5D experience, but the battery power seems consistent and I dont think its likely to break anytime soon. The fit with the camera seems ok, and it certainly handles better with it attached.
The lenses autofocus quickly and reasonably quietly, although I didnt really get a chance to push them to the limits given I was shooting landscapes. Sharpness appears to be acceptable from the results so far, but I will do more tests against my 17-40 f4L soon. That will be a real test.
So far so good. I enjoyed using the camera very much, and it has an excellent user interface. Kinda wish some of the features were on the 5D as well. I can tell Im going to enjoy using it, and will hopefully use it a lot more soon. More thoughts and pictures when I do.

First Glimpse at Timberline
My days are dominated by sketching and painting and the almost overwhelming feeling that Im already quite far behind. By about six months. That time is difficult to make up, but many paintings are moving along faster than I expected.
Its all in the pre-planning. From initial thumbnail sketches conceived in coffeeshops across the country to larger sketches to final paintings, the way to control time is through practicality. This is the best way I can ever hope to create this book on schedule.
Whats different about my approach is having the images push the story and the reader along, instead of illustrations only serving whats written in the text. Each painting has multiple elements and conditions that serve the flow of the story. The manuscript doesnt work just by itself; it needs the visuals to capture the sequence of the plot, to push the story forward through images that reveal extra information for the reader than whats in the prose. And the words provide much of what cant be painted.
This was intentional from the beginning. I didnt want a picture book or an illustrated novel. I wanted something that expanded the usual concept of a book-with-pictures or a graphic novel.
I started with the manuscript, capturing the story that grew visually in my mind. I worked on the manuscript for six years while composing page designs to support the sequence. Even after all of that time, Im still making some manuscript changes as the paintings bring up another level of situations that need to be addressed.
The novel is a risky venture as Ive shut down most assignment work to complete the book. I plan to record as much of it as possible though, to serve as a method for artists who may later be inspired enough to try this themselves.
This will be the first of quite a few posts describing the work without ruining much of the story. I figure that many of you might like to watch the progress as I go through it.
There will be one hundred twenty paintings in the novel, each one a double page spread. At this writing, I am about thirty paintings in. Ninety paintings to go!
Hows that for an assignment?
